sedges. The largest family in this group is the orchid, of which there are about 20,000 species each with unique complex and striking flowers adapted for highly specific insect pollination. The checklist aims to provide a major resource for a range of users, such as plant scientists, horticulturalists, ecologists, conservationists, medical practitioners and lawyers, as well as the wider public who wish to learn more about plants and who previously obtained such information by trawling through specialist literature, much of which was inaccessible to those living away from a major botanical library. The checklist also has extra features to help users. The Checklist Builder allows users to compile lists of monocotyledon species occurring within any continent, region or country, and also it is possible to find out what a plant looks like by a direct link from the accepted name to Google Images. The Checklist aims to be a significant contribution towards meeting international targets, most notably, the Global Strategy for Plant Conservation's target of a global checklist for the entire plant kingdom by 2010. A quarter of this global checklist is now complete, researchers say. The project has taken five years and has been coordinated from the Herbarium at Kew. But it has also depended on the collaboration of many botanists throughout the world, especially in tropical countries, to check and comment on the data. the two databases will shortly be integrated into a single resource. Researchers battling over the provenance of their rice, onions or any other monocotyledon plant get a big help this month. The Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew has just published the world's most definitive checklist of this key group of plants. The World Checklist of Monocotyledons consolidates the accepted names of all 75,000 species, along with their associated synonyms (a total of 200,000 names), into a searchable electronic database for the first time. The monocotyledons are an immensely diverse and economically important group, comprising some 75,000 species in 97 families — over a quarter of all flowering plants. They include the staple grass food crops, such as wheat, barley, rice and maize, and other important food plants such as onions, palms, yams, bananas, pineapples and gingers. Many other species are Rice in there: A new database checklist of the world's monocotyledon plants, which includes some of our most important economic species such as rice, has been published by Kew Gardens in London.

Distribution and risk evaluation of heavy metal in the soil of typical grassed swale
The concentration and distribution of Pb, Zn, Cu and Cr in the surface soil of three grassed swales located in the city of Beijing, Jiaxing and Shenzhen were studied in this paper. Evaluations on the risk of heavy metals were conducted based on the second level limit of soil environmental quality standard, using different indexes (i.e., single item, comprehensive items and potential ecological ...
متن کاملPhosphorus Sorption Capacity of Six Iowa Soils Before and After Five Years of Use as Vegetative Treatment Areas
Accumulation of phosphorus in soil is a major factor limiting the operational life of land application waste disposal systems. Moreover, for nutrient management purposes and evaluation of potential environmental problems it is necessary to understand the impact of manure application on soil phosphorus sorption characteristics. In this study laboratory experiments were conducted to investigate t...
متن کاملEvaluation of a Terrain Attribute Model for Locating Areas Suitable for Grassed Waterways in Agricultural Settings
Grassed waterways placed in high water flow zones substantially reduce erosion in agricultural fields. A recent study proposed a statistical model for waterway planning for a farm in the Outer Bluegrass physiographic region of Kentucky. The logistic regression model identified where channel erosion was likely to occur based on elevation-derived terrain attributes. The objective of this study wa...
متن کاملImpact of grassed waterways and compost filter socks on the quality of surface runoff from corn fields.
Surface runoff from cropland frequently has high concentrations of nutrients and herbicides, particularly in the first few events after application. Grassed waterways can control erosion while transmitting this runoff offsite, but are generally ineffective in removing dissolved agrochemicals. In this study, we routed runoff from one tilled (0.67 ha) and one no-till watershed (0.79 ha) planted t...
متن کاملAsphalt parking lot runoff nutrient quality: characterization and pollutant removal by bioretention cells
The objectives of this study were to characterize asphalt parking lot (APL) runoff quality, to determine influent factors to predict nutrient concentrations and loads from eight sites in North Carolina and to assess two grassed bioretention cell efficiencies to remove APL runoff pollutants. From the eight APL sites, event mean concentrations (EMCs) and loads were measured and statistically anal...
متن کاملImpact of rainfall intensity on the transport of two herbicides in undisturbed grassed filter strip soil cores.
Two series of displacement experiments with isoproturon and metribuzin herbicides were performed on two undisturbed grassed filter strip soil cores, under unsaturated steady-state flow conditions. Several rainfall intensities (0.070, 0.147, 0.161, 0.308 and 0.326 cm h(-1)) were used. A water tracer (bromide) was simultaneously injected in each displacement experiment. A descriptive analysis of ...
